The Help

The first novel I have chosen the read is The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I decided to read this book because after watching the movie i was in love. People always told me that reading the book is better because you get every detail. The Help is a story based on African American women maids who lived in Mississippi in the 1960's , and their struggles with the white society around them.
The book is written in many different perspectives , making it easier to understand everyone of the maids thoughts and feelings throughout the process of making the book. The three main characters are Aibileen , Skeeter and Minny. Aibileen is the maid for the Leefolt family , where her biggest job is to take care of their toddler. Minny is the maid that speaks her mind without ever thinking about what could happen. Skeeter just graduated from Old Miss College, she hopes to become a writer, and she does not believe in what is happening in the south. Skeeter believes that it doesn't matter what skin tone you are , you are still a person who should receive respect. Her idea to come up with writing this book came from losing someone very close to her. Ever since Skeeter was a little girl her family had a maid by the name of Constantine , who became Skeeters best friend.  Skeeter and Constantine did everything together , so when Skeeter came back from college and there was no sign of Constantine she decided that she would help write a book to voice these maids opinions. Throughout the book i am expecting to be reading more into depth about each maids experience.

  1. I too decided to read the book after watching the movie and love both. Do you think that the book offers more detail and character development than the movie? I feel that I've gotten to know more about each character through the book.

As I've read more I've started to notice that it's not only missing and loving Constantine that drives Skeeter to write the book. She seems to really want more equality and see the flaws in her society that she can't just ignore.

I do agree with your comment..... Skeeter does have a bigger drive to write this book because she is fighting for all to be treated equal , no matter what skin tone. With your question I to believe that by reading this book it helps you to grow closer to each character, they are much better explained in the book. THIS wouldn't say the book is better than the movie , it just broadens your understanding of the movie. Personally the next time I see the movie I will get things I might not have caught the first time .

  3. The two comments I read and your post Rachel V. made me pretty excited to read this book. I personally enjoy reading books for the same purpose as getting everyone's perspective on the story. Do you think that the change in perspective adds or takes away fromt his particular plot?

  4. Great post, I actually intend on reading this book. I watched the movie, and it was very funny, and adressed a very touchy subject in a very good way. My mom as well has read the book and has said nothing but good things about it. Cant wait to read it!

  5. Visha, I think that having a different perspective definitely adds to the plot. Having it come from the maids' perspectives and the White people's perspectives kind of gives you a side to pick. Do you "side" with the maids or with the opinions of the White people? So, having two different perspectives gives it a double voice which makes the book stand out from many other books. The author took a unique approach.

  6. I agree with Rachel. Having multiple perspectives I felt really added to the story. I could see the motivation behind each characters actions and understand where they were coming from a lot better than I could if it was only told from one side. I think for this plot it really added and created it. A clear villain and heroes were developed through the multiple voices.

  7. Great post! I am going to read this as one of my six novels. Would you prefer that readers of this novel see the movie also?

  8. Jonathan ,
I believe that if you want to read this book you should also watch the movie. It makes it easier to understand the book. I would recommend to read the book and watch the movie , the book gives more explanation than the movie , but both still great.

  9. Rachel this was a wonderful post!! I'm currently reading this novel and im sad to say that I am dissapointed. This is because I loved the movie so much that i thought the book would be great, but in a diffrent way. When reading the novel it was EXACTLY the same as the movie which I didnt like so much. Overall I think people should read the novel.

  10. I've heard so many great thing about the novel and the movie. Reading some of the comments it seems as though the book would be the best way to go since the movie is very similar. Sometimes it's best to create a cast in your own mind, paint the scenery yourself and enjoy what you put together on your own.

  11. This book actually sounds really interesting! Do you think the book is better than the movie? Or the other way around? I've heard around that the movie lacks a lot of details, and so they preferred the book.
